NCLA, DPLA, NELA V & NELA VI cohorts joined together to explore equity in education at the Franklinton Center at Bricks. The former slave plantation set the scene as we embarked on a journey to understand the inequities amongst students. Exploring topics about race, privilege and bias we unfolded potential problems that can affect student achievement. |
Multi-Tier System of Supports
Learning about Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) will be essential to the work of a new school leader. Implementing academic and behavior characteristics of students will help achieve consistent positive growth so that more students are successful. We have been fortunate to have several trainings from multiple presenters that have worked with designing and implementing MTSS on local, state and national levels.

Flipped Classroom

Dr. Lodge McCammon spent the day training DPLA and NCLA on how to use technology to improve communication to stakeholders. The McCammon method allows the presenter to share chunks of information to an audience and then give the participants an opportunity to show mastery before the presenter moves on to the next topic. |
Federal Policy
Learning about how federal education policies are made and how stakeholders can provide positive feedback was the focus of our visit to Washington, D.C. Author Rick Hess presided during our visit and currently serves as resident scholar and director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. Hess composed multiple panelist groups to give participants a wide range of experience and positions dealing with the history of policy initiatives.
During our visit we had the opportunity to reflect on our nation's history and the men and women who helped to form the greatest country on Earth. |

The Ron Clark Academy
The vision of The Ron Clark Academy is to "demonstrate transformative methods and techniques that are embraced and replicated." By attending the RCA 2 Day Experience I was both captivated at the engagement of students and motivated by their lust for learning. As a future school leader I look forward to the day I can implement some of the 'transformative methods and techniques' that I learned while at RCA. |
National Forum to Advance Rural Education
Our cohort was able to attend the National Forum to Advance Rural Education hosted by Battelle for Kids in Columbus, Ohio. The conference hosted presenters and topics unique to rural districts like ours.
In addition to attending workshops and hearing from inspiring speakers I was chosen as a presenter. My session focused on resources available to teachers on incorporating agricultural topics into the core curriculum. |
NCPAPA Fall Symposium
While attending the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association Fall Symposium I was able to attend sessions focused on the role of the building administrator. I heard from published author, Todd Whitaker, on what makes an amazing building administrator. I also had the opportunity to facilitate a session with fellow NCLA Fellow, Wendy Piro.

No Kid Hungry Annual Meeting
Attending the No Kid Hungry NC annual program was eye opening. The program focused on the importance of breakfast programs and schools that were determined to provide as many students as possible with breakfast each day. First Lady Kristin Cooper was in attendance to show her support of the Breakfast Challenge Awards.

ASCD Empower18
Attending ASCD Empower18 was inspiring and renewed my motivation to finish this program and the school year strong.
Hearing from Dr. Jill Biden, Manny Scott and General Colin Powell provided insights to education from a national prospective. I attended two of Dr. Randy Sprick's sessions on practical implementation of MTSS. I walked away with tangible action items to implement in my school. |
Distinguished Leadership in Practice
I had the opportunity to participate in the Distinguished Leadership in Practice program hosted by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals' Association. Through this experience I was able to learn about each of the standards I will be evaluated on as an administrator. Having access to ways to move a school through research-based practices is an invaluable resource.
