What I Learned
In my days at La Grange Elementary School I have spent time observing and coaching teachers, handling discipline, and assisting with projects. The lesson learned that means the most to me are working with students that have behavior issues and working to find the root cause of the problem. Many times our students are dealing with situations they are unable to deal with on their own. In acting out, they are telling us that something is wrong and they need our help. Watching students grow and be successful because we have given them the tools to cope with their situation is very satisfying.
Managing relationships with staff members has been a learning experience also. Moving from a teacher to an administrator the way that I interact with staff members is different. It is important to treat everyone the same and provide feedback with a growth mindset. As an administrator my goal is to grow not only students but teachers.
Working with parents has been a good experience this year. Conversations do not always start off easy but I believe parents do want the best for their children. Parents send us the best they have and working with parents to give their child the most opportunities to grow is a vital role of an administrator.
Lastly, delegation is paramount to accomplishing all of the tasks required in running a school. Allowing teachers and staff to take the lead on projects builds capacity within the school and creates more buy-in amongst those helping make the school a better place. There are only so many minutes in a day and each person should be utilized to their fullest potential.
